Alberta Climate Action Incentive (CAI) for 2025: Eligibility, Payments & Claim Guide
The Alberta Climate Action Incentive (CAI) is a quarterly, tax-free payment for Alberta residents to help offset the costs of the federal carbon tax (fuel charge) in the province. The CAI puts money back in the pockets of Albertans and is paid directly by the CRA—no separate application required. This in-depth guide covers CAI eligibility, payment schedule, how to claim, how the rural supplement works, and how to maximize your benefit by stacking with other Alberta and Canada-wide climate incentives.

Who is Eligible for the Alberta Climate Action Incentive?
- Resident of Alberta on the first day of the payment month and the last day of the previous month
- Age 19 or older, OR have (or had) a spouse/common-law partner, OR are a parent who lives (or lived) with your child
- Both renters and homeowners qualify—no need to own property
- Newcomers, students, and rural residents are all eligible (see rural supplement below)
- Eligibility is income-tested (phased out at higher incomes; thresholds updated yearly)
How is eligibility determined? CRA uses your annual tax return to assess eligibility. If you don’t file a return, you won’t get the CAI—even if you have zero income.
How Much is the CAI? Payment Amounts & Schedule
- Quarterly payments: Issued in April, July, October, and January (based on your most recent filed tax return)
- For 2025, maximum annual CAI amounts (approx.):
- Single adult: ~$900/year
- Spouse/common-law partner: +$450
- Each child under 19: +$225
- Rural supplement (see below): +10% of base amount if you live outside a census metropolitan area
- The benefit is indexed yearly. Actual amounts: CRA CAI Payment Amounts
- Payments are made by direct deposit (if set up) or mailed cheque.
Rural Supplement
- If you live outside a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), you get an extra 10% on your CAI payment.
- This is to help rural Albertans who face higher energy costs and fewer transit options.
- CRA will typically determine this automatically from your postal code, but verify your address is current.
How Do I Get Paid? Claiming & Missed CAI Payments
- File your Alberta tax return every year—even with no income. The CAI is based on your tax return. If you have a spouse/partner, both should file for maximum benefit.
- If you have children, ensure they are listed on your tax return (and registered for the Canada Child Benefit if under 18).
- Update your address and marital status with CRA to avoid delays or missed rural supplement.
- Once you file, CRA automatically assesses eligibility and issues payment. No separate application is needed.
- If you missed a payment or think you’re eligible but didn’t get paid:
- Check your tax return for errors
- Contact CRA (1-800-387-1193 for benefits) for a review
Stacking with Other Alberta & Federal Climate Incentives
- The CAI is fully stackable with Alberta and federal green/clean tech programs, utility rebates, and municipal grants.
- Common stacking scenarios:
- CAI + Alberta Energy Savings for Homeowners rebates (for insulation, windows, etc.)
- CAI + Federal Greener Homes Grant or Loan
- CAI + Alberta Clean Tech business and property tax incentives
- None of these affect your CAI eligibility—payments are not reduced by other rebates.
